M Is for Movement

CROPPED M IMAGELife is movement. If you don’t move, you die. You don’t need to be an avid marathon runner or CrossFitter to get the benefits of exercise. In fact, I’m not just talking about exercise, although that is one essential part of it. It’s vital to be moving throughout the day.

Sitting Is the New Smoking

You’ve probably heard that sitting is the new smoking. That’s because too much time in a stationary position can result in the development of heart disease, obesity and more. Even if you exercise, sitting more than 30 minutes at a time is harmful and increases your risk of death. So many people sit all day long due to their desk jobs. If you’re one of those, there are some things you can do:

  • Take a brisk walk for five minutes every 30 minutes or so
  • Do jumping jacks or jump rope
  • Get an adjustable standing desk that you can raise and lower throughout the day

Choose the Type of Exercise You’ll Stick With

I often get asked, “What is the best form of exercise?” My response is, “The one that you’ll do regularly!” Personally, I enjoy Pilates, which is ideal for any age or level of physical fitness. I also like Tabata, which is a type of High-Intensity Interval Training, and the Slow Burn Fitness Method. It’s important always to start slow and work yourself up gradually. And I’m even starting to enjoy swimming!

Whichever type of exercise you engage in, you’ll be doing your body good! A host of benefits are associated with exercise. These include improved sleep, increased energy, improved mood, decreased stress and so much more.
